A Brief History of Valentine’s Day
Valentine's Day, celebrated in the USA on February 14th, originated from a medley of ancient pagan Roman Catholic traditions. The day is named after Saint Valentine, a Roman Catholic priest, who lived in Rome in the 3rd century, AD. Several stories describe him defying an emperor's ban on marriage, for young soldiers, and secretly marrying couples. He also helped Christians escape wicked Roman prisons, but was eventually caught, and martyred for his actions, by the Roman Emperor Claudius II.
The ancient Romans also celebrated a pagan festival called Lupercalia in the middle of February, officially the start of their springtime. It is believed that, as part of the celebration, boys drew names of girls from a box, and the pair would become a couple during the festival, or sometimes even longer, which might have influenced the concept of Valentine's Day.
By the Middle Ages, Valentine had become one of the most popular saints in England and France. The notion of Valentine's Day as a day for romance became more popular through Geoffrey Chaucer, and other poets of the time, who linked Valentine's Day with love birds, and other romantic impressions.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, it grew into an occasion where couples expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). In the 1900s, printed cards began to replace written letters, due to improvements in printing technology. Today, it is widely celebrated around the world, and the tradition of expressing love and affection extends beyond romantic relationships, including friends and family members.
While I have no respect for pagan holidays and traditions, I still see this as a great opportunity, to gift someone with a loving KJV scripture card.
